Last month Microsoft disclosed that unclassified email systems of several State Department officials were compromised, along with approximately 25 other organizations according to a Wall Street Journal article. Through a series of events, China-linked hackers gained access to a Microsoft engineer’s account which allowed them to obtain the encryption keys of various hosted email accounts.

Even with all the cybersecurity resources, capabilities, and best practices Microsoft uses to manage its hosted email services, China found a way in.
